52 Money Save Ways: Week 42: Repair Before Replacing

In our world, we have gotten so used to throwing things out and just buying a replacement rather than repairing what is broken. This goes for clothes that are no longer mended, electronics that no longer work properly and even furniture. In many cases, while it will probably mean an extra step, repairing or paying to repair something is sometimes much cheaper than replacing.

A prime example of this is jeans. I am personally pretty picky about my jeans. I buy medium cost jeans at malls because I find they last longer, fit my body shape better and have higher quality stitching than bargain jeans. Because of this, I would get so mad when I had the inner thigh wear out on them and felt helpless as if I just had to come up with more money to buy new ones. I started saving my jeans as they wore out and tried to sew them myself. I can’t sew to to save my life, so this never really worked out in my favor. I decided to call some tailor and dry cleaning shops to see if they offer repairs of this kind. To my surprise they do and in my area, it only cost 5-7 dollars per pair to have them fixed. So for the price of 1 pair of my jeans, I got 7 or 8 pairs fixed and I was able to wear them again.

No matter what it is, you can usually find a video or tutorial online showing you have to repair just about anything.

So before you throw anything out, ask yourself; “Can this be fixed and will it be cheaper to fix this than replace it?” Not only is this better for your budget, but the planet thanks you, too!
