Things To Do in Michigan In Winter For Kids

Winters here may be long, but we Michiganders are known for making the most of each season. There’s no need to feel cabin fever when there are so many things to do! Whether you’re ready to get out and enjoy the cold weather, or would prefer to stay warm and toasty inside, there’s no shortage of Mid-Michigan winter activities to partake in!

OUTDOOR THINGS TO DO IN MICHIGAN

Potter Park Zoo – Open year round, this zoo is home to more than 500 animal residents, 160 of which are threatened or endangered species. There’s plenty to do there; Kids can even fly like a bird in the $7 bungee jump!

Snowshoe S’more RaceLearn how to snowshoe in this fun, family event taking place every February! Walk or run the one-mile course through Fitzgerald Park. Stations will be set up throughout the course where participants can grab pieces to put together s’mores at the finish line! Limited snowshoes are available for rent, so email Tshort@eatoncounty.org to reserve a spot.

Grand Ledge Winterfest – There’s something for everyone during this three-day celebration, with proceeds benefitting the Grand Ledge Opera House. There’s the Grand Ledge Voice singing competition on February 23rd, the Michigan Craft Beer and Chili Cook-Off on the 24th, the Cardboard Sled Racing and the Wine and Chocolate Party on the 25th. {be sure to check their website for updated information for 2018}

Ski and Snowboard at Mount Brighton – No snow? No problem! This “mountain” makes its own. Though it won’t exactly be an inexpensive day out, there’s certainly plenty of active, outdoor, fun for the entire family.

Snow Tubing at Hawk Island Park– A less expensive (and less athletic) option is to load up the family and head out for a day of tubing! Snow tubes are included in the rental fee, which starts at only $8! There is a vehicle fee of $3 for Ingham County residents and $5 for non-residents. Snowmaking machines are used to extend the length of time the hill can be enjoyed.

Ice Skate at The Summit – Located in Dimondale, this complex has both public skate availability and lessons. Admission is only $6, while kids 4 and under are free. Skate rental is only $2.

Michigan Nordic Fire Festival – February 23rd through the 25th, celebrate Nordic culture in Charlotte with hammer throwing, horn blowing, cardboard long ship racing, belly dancers, snow sculpting and so much more!

Go on a Winter Shoe Hike at the Fenner Nature Center. The next one is scheduled for February 9th.
