How To Get Back Into Couponing (When You Stopped For a While)

scissors1-2

Sometimes, for whatever reason, we stop couponing. Life gets too busy and we find ourselves falling away. Then, when life settles down a little bit, we want to get back into it and find we are stuck without a routine and expired coupons from last time.

Here are some tips for getting back into couponing if you are wanting to start again. These tips are also helpful for new couponers as well.

  • Go through your old stash of coupons. depending on how long ago you stopped, you may have a lot of expireds that can still be useful for other people. For instance, you can send them to military families that can still use them on-base up to 6 (sometimes 3) months expired. Consider finding a local chapter of coupons for troops to send them to.
  • Realize that there are probably many new smart phone apps that help couponers than before. One of them is Favado. It can help you get back into couponing really easy with store price matches and showing of the best deals and available coupons.
  • Get yourself organized again. Make room for a stash in your home if you don’t still have one and make sure you still have an organizing system for your coupons that is in good working order.
  • Join groups and forums online to help you get the newest info on current promotions.

These can also be great places to trade coupons and get a stock pile of them going again.

  • Start asking friends and neighbors to save their coupon inserts again for you. If you have no one to ask, one trick is to get a couple subscriptions to a smaller town’s paper (those are usually free). They might be less expensive, but still offer the coupon inserts you are looking for. You can also order coupons. Many times, especially a place like Insert Insanity offers combo packs that will help you jump back into couponing!
  • Follow or re-follow coupon bloggers on Facebook and twitter. Sign up for their newsletters as well. You may not be able to jump right back into couponing, but at least you will know what the newest deals are so you can start to take advantage of them as they come up.
  • Sign up or re-sign up for store emails and savings/rewards programs. If you are still a member of these programs, make sure to review the newest guidelines and rules with them as they are updated regularly. You want to make sure you are using them to their full advantage.
  • Review the coupon policy at your favorite stores. Stores will often update their policies and not tell their customers. You may run into a problem if you try to do couponing the way you did before you quit.
  • Follow your favorite brands for coupons on social media.
  • Consider taking a couponing class at your local adult education center or by a local coupon blogger. They will tell you all about the newest ways to coupon and you get the added bonus of making like-mined shoppers who may be great coupon pals. *If you’re in lansing we hold local coupon swaps and classes!
